dKa: Rationing Insulin

Posted on January 5, 2019 at 8:25 AM

Rationing insulin? I've Been there! I'm completely astonished by the rise in costs of insulin over the past few years. The manufacturers surely cannot be doing that much costly "groundbreaking" research to warrant a vial of insulin to increase 300% by 2017. A vial of name brand used to be $75 WITHOUT insurance coverage. It used to be $25 WITH insurance.

...

TODAY: Without insurance (costly in itself $1000/MONTH), it would cost me $50,000 per year just to breathe. It's not ethical !

...

I have rationed food to afford insulin, in the past. I have rationed insulin to afford breathing into my next night. I have skipped food altogether for several days at a time, because insurance would not allot more than 30 days worth of insulin per month, never accounting for the months with 31 days. What was I supposed to do for that final day of the month?

...

Pharma holds too much power. With power comes greed. With greed comes no mercy. In a capitalist nation, I understand that Business is Business. But with MILLIONS DEPENDING on the medication, with ZERO options, I don't know where it can be fixed.

...

I, myself, have very little option when it comes to insulin. Like many others, I'm allergic to several brands, other kinds put me into midnight insulin shock, and others simply do NOT work. I am using CGM, omnipod, a bolus insulin, victoza and metformin. It's been 20 years with type 1. And PCOS, guys. It's ridiculous. And I'm done. It needs to stop.

...

The young man in this article... I've BEEN there. I was living in an apartment with my boyfriend, age 20. I was working two jobs, plus overtime to afford rent. I didn't want to shame my boyfriend by asking for help from my dad (which I NEVER did before), but we had 17 cents in our bank account and I hadn't eaten for two days because I had run out of insulin and couldn't afford another vial til next paycheck.

...

It was $75 to help me live. I was ashamed to ask for it, so hell bent on proving to everyone, including myself, that I could make it in a big grown up world on my own. But as my skin felt tight, my glucose ran in mid 300s for days with no way of bringing it down safely, hunger pangs twisting my gut, I sat on the floor of my kitchen and called my dad. Shame burned my face, thoughts echoing in my head "you'll never be able to survive on your own!", But I knew if I waited another day, I would end up with ketoacidosis (dKa) .

...

And that's how this young man died. Probably thinking he could sleep off the high blood sugar. But the consistent high glucose was shredding his organs and veins internally and eventually, it all shut down.

...

I've been in dKa a few times in 20 years with type 1 and it's awful. It's painful like continual internal bruising and the thirst can make you want to squeeze a drink of water from your own sweat.

...

The worst part is, you KNOW you're on your way toward death, but there's very little you can do to stop it, without insulin. Your muscle strength goes and so does your will, then you convince yourself "just a little nap, I'll deal with it when I wake up". LIES! I KNEW it was a lie, as I closed my eyes. Once i even told myself "someone will be home soon, they'll find me and call the ambulance" . So tired. So much aching and burning blood. That was before doing the calculations in my head and realizing it was more than two hours til someone was coming home and that I needed to drag my body to the phone and get help immediately.

...

The pharmaceutical companies KNOW this is happening. I don't know how to stop it. All I can think to do is to share my story. Share this young man's story. Keep sharing it til it echoes and resonates.

...

Something's got to change. And Obamacare was NEVER the answer. We do not shake hands with the Devil, kids. There is too much power in too few hands, in medicine especially.

Please research Dr Denise Faustman's work toward a cure for type 1 diabetes at www.FaustmanLab.org

She is currently (Jan 5, 2019) in Phase II trials of the FDA approval toward her use of the BCG drug to cure type 1 diabetes.

Also, I posted this same text on my facebook page, linked to this "news" article: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mother-fights-for-lower-insulin-prices-after-sons-tragic-death/?fbclid=IwAR2SLg8RkJM_3OjVE-4qBY7IrT-yvt4RYzuADu7xtUw9VyvbUOFonUwTQGw

... I attempted to "boost" my same reaction to the news link (same words as listed here, in this blog) and Facebook denied my request to boost it to get more people who DON'T follow me to see the link and what I had to say about it. They DENIED me because Facebook Review Team says I do not have approval to make political posts. Their team says I need to go through the proper channels to get APPROVED to have a Political Opinion. CENSORSHIP...
